Blue Jays set for MLB opener
The Major League Baseball season begins on Sunday and Toronto Blue Jays fans couldn’t be more excited. Well, that may be exaggerating things a bit.
The Jays enter the new season in a rebuilding phase and all you have to do is look at their future odds at Sportsbook.com to see how far they’re not expected to go. The odds on the Jays winning the World Series are +10,000. And their odds to win the AL East aren’t any better, as they’re also at +10,000.
What would you expect after the Jays traded their best player and arguably the best pitcher they’ve had in franchise history? With Roy Halladay now wearing a Phillies uniform the Jays rotation is all young guns, except for Brian Tallet, which isn’t saying much. Their new “ace”, Shaun Marcum, is coming off surgery, while the rest of the rotation, Ricky Romero, Marc Rzepczynski, and Brandon Morrow, have only 65 starts combined between them.
While Jays fans look to the future, Yankees fans are hoping for another World Series repeat. The Yankees rode last year’s new pickups, CC Sabathia, A.J. Burnett, and Mark Teixeira, to a World Series title, and they look like the team to beat again. Over at Sportsbook.com the Yanks are the World Series favorite at +275. With Javier Vazquez joining the rotation, and Curtis Granderson and Nick Johnson joining the already-powerful lineup, New York will be extremely tough to beat in the postseason.
If the Yankees aren’t able to repeat, bettors could be in a for a nice October payday. The next teams on the Sportsbook.com odds list, Boston and Philadelphia, are both listed at +600.
The Phillies, who failed to defend as World Series champs last season, will look for newly-acquired Halladay to lead them back to the Fall Classic. That could depend more on the rest of the Phillies’ rotation - Cole Hamels, Joe Blanton, J.A. Happ - than on Halladay, who could be a lock for 20 wins.
The Red Sox made their own improvement to try and keep up with the Yankees in the AL East. Boston added John Lackey to their rotation and completely changed the left side of their infield by adding shortstop Marco Scutaro and third baseman Adrian Beltre. They also lost Jason Bay, which could hurt them at the plate because his replacement, Mike Cameron, likely won’t be able to fill his shoes.
The BoSox and Yankees get their old rivalry started right away this season with a game on opening night on Sunday. Look for opening-night odds at the Greek later this week.
