Bruins Favored in Historic Game 7
The Philadelphia Flyers are on the verge of history. In the history of NHL odds, only two teams have ever come back from a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs—and the Flyers get their shot in Game 7 on Friday night.
Only the 1942 Toronto Maple Leafs and 1975 New York Islanders were able to dig themselves out of such a big hole, but the Flyers have battled back despite a plethora of injuries—including their No. 1 goaltender.
Despite the collapse, the home-town Bruins are a -125 favorite for tonight’s game. (Bettors backing the Flyers can usually find the best NHL underdog odds at bodog sportsbook or SportsInteraction.com). The Flyers won 4-0 when the visited Boston in Game 5, but the Bruins did manage to defend home ice in Games 1 and 2.
The Flyers have won the last two games despite going most of the way with their back-up goalie between the pipes. Brian Boucher was toppled by a couple of players in Game 5 and succumbed to a knee injury.
His replacement, Michael Leighton, hadn’t played since March 16. Leighton hasn’t shown the slightest bit of rust, however, stopping 44 of the 45 shots he’s faced. Leighton was especially instrumental in the 2-1 victory in Game 6, stopping 30 shots.
Goaltending, as always, will be a big story on Friday. Tuukka Rask hasn’t looked as sharp in this series as he did during the regular season or against the Sabres in Round 1. His save percentage over the past six games is just .904.
In Game 7, the Bruins need to get their power play going. They’ve failed to capitalize with the man-advantage in the past two games—though, to be fair, the Flyers have only given them six opportunities. Philadelphia has potted two power play goals in the last two games.
Daniel Briere and Mike Richards have been fantastic for the Flyers, racking up eight points each in this series. Philadelphia is also getting plenty of offense from the blue line, where Chris Pronger and Matt Carle are averaging a point-per-game against the Bruins.
Dennis Wideman has been pretty solid for Boston, posting six points in the series. Miroslav Satan has cooled off considerably; he scored five points in the first three games but has been held scoreless.
