Canadian Open Preview and Bodog Odds
The PGA takes up residence north of the border this week with a pretty good field set to tee off in the Canadian Open.
This year's venue for the Open is St. George's Golf and Country Club in Etobicoke, Ontario. St. George's has hosted the Open four times before, but not since 1968. There will be a large Canadian presence in the field this year with 13 Canadian players hoping to become the first Canuck to win the Open since Pat Fletcher in 1954.
There may be 13 Canadians in the field, but in reality only three have a legitimate shot at winning. Those three are Mike Weir, Stephen Ames, and Graham DeLaet. Ames is the favorite of the three at Bodog.ca at 33/1, while Weir is a 40/1 underdog. Weir came the closest of any Canadian to winning the Open when he finished second in 2004, but he's only cracked the Top 10 once since then. DeLaet recorded his best finish in a PGA event earlier this year when he tied for third at the Shell Houston Open, but he's a 100/1 longshot this week at Bodog.ca.
The overall favorite at Bodog.ca this week is Paul Casey at 16/1. Casey was in contention for last week's British Open title in the final round, but stumbled and could not catch eventual champion Louis Oosthuizen. Casey's performance in Britain still bumped him up to No. 8 in the world rankings and at least this week in Canada he won't have to contend with Oosthuizen again.
Some of the top names in golf Casey will have to watch out for at St. George's include Luke Donald (18/1), Retief Goosen (18/1), Sean O'Hair (18/1), Tim Clark (18/1), and Camillo Villegas (25/1). Other notable names that could contend for the tournament title are Hunter Mahan (33/1), Trevor Immelman (50/1), Brent Snedeker (40/1), Fred Couples (33/1), and Ricky Barnes (33/1).
There are only two former Canadian Open champions looking for a repeat win this week. They are 2009 winner Nathan Green, and 2001 winner Scott Verplank. Verplank is a 33/1 underdog on the early odds at Bodog.ca, while Green, despite being the defending champ, has not been given individual odds and was instead lumped in with the field at 10/1.
