Canucks, Luongo lead way on NHL Playoffs MVP odds
The Conn Smythe Trophy is awarded to the NHL Playoffs MVP and, if Sportsbook.com knows its stuff, the man to beat is Vancouver Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo. There may only be one Canadian team left, but it’s brimming with Conn Smythe candidates. Here’s a breakdown of the top contenders for playoff MVP at Sportsbook.com.
Roberto Luongo, Canucks, +550
It’s a little surprising to see Luongo ranked first on this list, as he’s choked more often than an unsupervised toddler playing with his big brother’s Lego set. Luongo is here because he plays goalie for the Stanley Cup favorites, but there’s much better value on the board.
Ryan Kesler, Canucks, +600
Better value begins with Luongo’s teammate, Ryan Kesler. Canadians lament the fact that Kesler is, in fact, American, as he plays with the kind of grit and flair fans are accustomed to seeing north of the border. Whether its scoring goals, finishing checks, playing defense or special teams, Kesler has been the best player in the playoffs to date—and he’s undoubtedly the true top contender for playoff MVP.
Dwayne Roloson, Lightning, +600
At 41 years old, Roloson has shocked and pleased the hockey world, like a cougar dancing wildly on the bar on ladies night. But the same question lingers for both—do they have the stamina to finish the race? “Rollie the Goalie” is 9-3 with a 2.01 goals against average and .941 save percentage in the postseason. If he can maintain that pace, he’ll be bringing home a few pieces of hardware… the Conn Smythe and the Stanley Cup.
Henrik Sedin, Canucks, +700
Now is the time to buy on Sedin—wait any longer, and you’re going to lose whatever value he has left. Henrik was railed on after scoring just a single point during a seven-game stretch, but he has six points in his past four outings—including a goal and an assist in Vancouver’s 3-2 win over San Jose in Game 1 of the West final.
Value pick: Joe Thornton, Sharks, +1800
Thornton belongs with Luongo in the choker’s corner, but he’s acquitted himself pretty well during this year’s playoffs, racking up 13 points in 14 games (tied for fourth in the league). If you believe the Sharks can get past Vancouver and make a Cup run, Thornton offers tremendous value compared to the rest of the pack.
Other top Conn Smythe/NHL Playoff MVP contenders:
Martin St. Louis, Lightning, +800
Tim Thomas, Bruins, +800
Antti Niemi, Sharks, +1000
Daniel Sedin, Canucks, +1000
Vincent Lecavlier, Lightning, +1000
