Final Four Preview
With a pair of No. 5 seeds in the Final Four this has been one of the wildest NCAA Tournaments in years.
With teams dealing out upsets throughout the tournament there likely aren’t many good-looking brackets anywhere in the world right now. The only No. 1 seed to make the Final Four, Duke, was the one No. 1 seed some of the experts thought might have been shown some charity by the selection committee.
Before Duke attempts to reach another Final Four on Saturday the first game on tap is the battle of the No. 5 seeds between Butler and Michigan State.
The Bulldogs have surprised everyone by making it this far in the tournament. You can’t say they don’t belong, though, after their back-to-back upsets of Syracuse and Kansas State. Butler was a 4-point underdog versus the Wildcats, but delivered a big 63-56 upset win. Gordon Haywood delivered the knockout blow with 22 points and nine rebounds.
The Spartans were also counted out by most people, especially after leading scorer Kalin Lucas was lost for the tournament. Instead of folding without Lucas the Spartans took off and in the Elite Eight they edged Tennessee 70-69 as a 2-point underdog. Durrell Summers made up for Lucas’ absence with 21 points and Raymar Morgan delivered a clutch free throw late to win the game. Michigan State will have to keep producing the upsets to get back to the championship game for the second year in a row. Over at Bet365 the Spartans are a 1.5-point underdog.
In the other Final Four matchup Duke looks to return to the title game for the first time since their 2001 championship season, while the Mountaineers haven’t been to the final since losing in 1959.
Duke has steamrolled through the tournament so far, including their 78-71 win over Baylor in the Elite Eight. The Blue Devils covered the 5-point spread in the win to improve to 4-0 ATS in the tournament. Nolan Smith shot 4-of-6 from three-point range to lead Duke with 29 points in the win.
West Virginia is also 4-0 ATS after taking care of Kentucky 73-66 in the Elite Eight as a 4-point underdog. Da’Sean Butler led the way again with 18 points, while shooting four-of-eight from behind the arc.
Duke and West Virginia clashed in the second round of the tournament in 2008. The Blue Devils were a 4-point favorite, but lost to the Mountaineers 73-67. Duke is favored again in this year’s rematch, down as 2.5-point chalk at Bet365.
