Flyers set for Cup odds drop at Sportsbook.com
The Philadelphia Flyers are reeling at the wrong time for bettors, and their recent play is sure to drop their odds at the window.
Philadelphia has been the class of the Eastern Conference for most of the season, but a recent slump has put first place in jeopardy. The Flyers went on a nice 7-3 moneyline run back in February, but it’s been downhill since then for the defending conference champions. Philly went just 6-12 against the moneyline its next 18 games since the hot streak and is now at +275 to win the East at Sportsbook.com.
The favorites in the East are the Washington Capitals, who are priced at +240 at Sportsbook.com to advance to the Stanley Cup final. The Capitals are headed in the opposite direction of the Flyers, even if injuries to Mike Green (concussion), Dennis Wideman (leg), and Tom Poti (groin) have decimated the back end.
Washington struggled in late January and into mid-February with only three wins in 10 games during that stretch, but it went 16-5 against the moneyline in its next 21 contests to tie Philadelphia for first spot in the conference. The Caps are now set at +500 to hoist the Cup, while the stumbling Flyers are listed at +600.
The chalk in the Western Conference (+140) and to win the Cup (+300) are the Vancouver Canucks, who used an impressive 13-2 moneyline streak in the month of March to stake their claim as the team to beat in the playoffs.
There’s plenty to like about the Canucks, including their +72 goal differential which puts them miles ahead of Boston, which is second in that category at +49. Vancouver is first in goals against (2.2) and on the power play (24.4%), and is second in goals per game (3.2) and in penalty killing (86.1%).
If there’s a knock on the Canucks it’s that they have a propensity to disappoint in the postseason. This isn’t the first time Vancouver has posted an excellent regular season, although it has never been head and shoulders above the rest of the league to this extent.
Sitting behind the Canucks on the Sportsbook.com board are the San Jose Sharks (+300 to win the West and +800 to win the Cup), who are healthy and red-hot for bettors with the postseason only a week away. The Sharks have cashed eight of their last nine games to sit second in the West, with their only defeat during the span coming in a shootout at Los Angeles on March 24.
In addition to their lack of injury issues vis-a-vis the other Cup contenders, San Jose features some serious scoring balance. The Sharks sport six 20-goal scorers led by Patrick Marleau’s 37 tallies, and Joe Pavelski (19 goals) could easily join the club by season’s end.
