NHL Stanley Cup Futures Update
The NHL offseason has been busy with a ton of free-agent signings and trades so far, but one thing remains the same – the Blackhawks are still the 2011 Stanley Cup favorites.
The Blackhawks' Cup-winning roster has been partially blown up during the offseason but they're still the favorites at Bodog.ca at 11/2. Just a few of the players departing Chicago include Dustin Byfuglien, Kris Versteeg, Andrew Ladd, and Brent Sopel. Chicago still needs to re-up with netminder Antti Niemi, but that will happen eventually so he won't be going anywhere. Chicago still has Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane, Marian Hossa, and Duncan Keith, so there's no need to panic in the Windy City.
The Blackhawks aren't overwhelming favorites, though, with Pittsburgh and Washington right behind them on the Bodog.ca odds at 13/2. The Pens said goodbye to veteran defensemen Sergei Gonchar and Jordan Leopold, but quickly filled their spots with free agents Paul Martin and Zbynek Michalek. Pittsburgh could still use a scoring winger to line up alongside Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin but it's pretty slim pickings from the remaining lot of available players.
The Capitals have been pretty quiet during the free agency frenzy despite their early exit from the postseason. Washington only re-signed some players by handing Eric Fehr and Jeff Schultz new contracts. Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom, Alex Semin, and Mike Green are all still on the roster so the Caps will start the season with basically the same team that lost to Montreal in the opening round.
One of the regulars atop the NHL Cup futures in recent years, the San Jose Sharks, have seen their stock slip a bit. San Jose is down to 12/1 on the Bodog.ca odds after a few offseason moves. San Jose locked up free agents Patrick Marleau and Joe Pavelski but they let staring goalie Evgeni Nabokov walk. Instead the Sharks signed Antero Niittymaki to fill the void between the pipes. Niittymaki was 21-18-5 with a 2.87 goals-against average in Tampa Bay last season and he'll try to resurrect his career behind a better team in San Jose.
