NHL Trade Deadline Recap
The National Hockey League's trade deadline came and went with a whimper on Monday as very few of the rumored moves actually materialized.
There were a number of notable names shipped out prior to deadline day, including Tomas Kaberle, Kris Versteeg, Erik Johnson, Chris Stewart, and Alex Goligoski, but on the actual deadline day most moves were quite tame.
The biggest splash on deadline day was arguably made by the Washington Capitals. The Caps shored up their blue line by acquiring defenseman Dennis Wideman from Florida and they added some experience up front by getting veteran Jason Arnott from New Jersey. Going into deadline day the Capitals were a +1000 underdog to win the Stanley Cup at Sportsbook.com, and since neither move is earth-shaking that likely won't change very much.
The other big move on Monday was between the Los Angeles Kings and the Edmonton Oilers. The Kings added Dustin Penner up front for prospect Colten Teubert and some draft picks. Penner should give the Kings added forward depth after registering 63 points for the Oilers last season and 39 points through 62 games this year.
The Kings are currently fifth in the Western Conference, but that only leaves them two points up on ninth place so they're in no way guaranteed a playoff spot. At Sportsbook.com they're a +2500 longshot to win the Cup and a +1200 underdog to win the West. Those odds could improve slightly if the addition of Penner allows the Kings to create some breathing room in the playoff race.
A few other moves worth noting from deadline day include Rostislav Klesla headed to Phoenix from Columbus in exchange for Scottie Upshall and Sami Lepisto, and Chris Campoli joining the blue line in Chicago from Ottawa. As well, Maxim Lapierre will give the Canucks some more grit after coming over from Anaheim, while Vancouver also grabbed Chris Higgins from Florida.
Vancouver, the top team in the league, is currently a co-favorite with Detroit and Philadelphia to win the Stanley Cup at Sportsbook.com at +350, and the addition of tough guy Lapierre and fourth-liner Higgins won't change that. The defensive upgrades for Phoenix and Chicago may help them in their push for the postseason, but it likely won't shake up the odds very much. The Blackhawks are currently +1800 underdogs to repeat as Cup champs, while the Coyotes are +2000 'dogs.
