Updated Stanley Cup odds as the postseason draws near
The Stanley Cup playoffs are just a week or so away. The Western Conference playoff field has been determined, while four teams are battling for the final three spots in the Eastern Conference. But of all these teams, who are the real contenders for the Stanley Cup? Let’s take a look at current Stanley Cup odds and the top teams gunning for a championship.
Washington Capitals +375
Record: 53-15-12*
The Caps have been the NHL’s best team, wire-to-wire. They’re 6-1-3 in their past 10 games with a four-game winning streak. The only concern is goaltending, as Jose Theodore and Semyon Varlamov must prove they can do it come playoff time.
Chicago Blackhawks +400
Record: 51-22-7
The Blackhawks did a lot of learning in last year’s postseason. These youngsters look battle hardened and ready to win now but—like Washington—will their goaltending hold up? Unproven Antti Niemi will be between the pipes.
Pittsburgh Penguins +550
Record: 46-27-7
The defending Stanley Cup champions look as dangerous as ever, but can they get past Washington or New Jersey? Sidney Crosby and Co. went winless against their two biggest rivals this season, going a frightening 0-8-2 in 10 games.
San Jose Sharks +550
Record: 50-20-11
The Sharks have racked up wins and will finish near the top of the standings, if not first overall, in the regular season. What else is new? Much of the familiar faces remain in place, and those faces have disappointed San Jose fans every year with playoff choke jobs.
Vancouver Canucks +700
Record: 48-28-5
This looks like the year Vancouver could get over the hump. The Canucks have been mentioned by some in Cup talks for years, but there were always whispers star goalie Roberto Luongo couldn’t cut it in the playoffs. Don’t believe it—his Olympic gold medal says otherwise.
Detroit Red Wings
+700 Record: 42-24-14
It wasn’t long ago Detroit was in danger of missing the playoffs; now the Wings are among Stanley Cup leaders. The defending Western Conference champs are 15-3-2 since February 13. You can’t underestimate this club, even with untested Jimmy Howard in net.
*All records before Friday, April 9 games
